Why a Blow Torch Winter Is Not Likely!

Folks..I been reading alot around the internet about this coming winter of 2010-2011 and how it is going to be a blowtorch winter across the east and in some cases across the nation..

I am trying really hard to actually figure out where people come up with these things..

Lets look at the pattern that has been in place in regards to the NAO and the PNA for quite some time..

nao.timeseries

pna.timeseries

The above is the NAO and PNA history in graphical form. Notice how that since 2009 the NAO has been primarily negative?

Notice how the PNA since about mid 2009 has been primarily positive?

The concurrent theme since 2009 has been for a negative NAO and a Positive PNA though it does indeed fluctuate from time to time.

If this theme continues into winter..then the chances of a blowtorch winter occurring are less then 5 %..regardless of being in a La Nina.

Later this week in the monday to wednesday time frame we will take a look at all the winters that have been classified as La Ninas and see what the outcome was …
